At first glance, a Wet Tile Saw looks the same as a regular miter or table saw. Although they look similar they’re different in many ways.

A Tile Saw works by utilizing a diamond blade that grind’s through the tile or stone. Opposed to regular saws that have aggressive teeth that cut and rip through the material, a diamond blade is smoother and instead of cutting it grinds.

Because Tile Saw’s grind instead of cut they produce a lot of heat and friction. Therefore Tile Saws commonly use water to cool down the tile/stone while cutting.

A Wet Tile Saw has either a reservoir filled with water and a pump attached or will directly connect to a standard hose fitting. The water will pump through nozzles that are located by the blade to cool down and lubricate your cut.

Stationary Wet Tile Saws are almost always equipped with some sort of a water table or catchment feature that will collect the water runoff and spray produced from the nozzles.

Some models will even recycle and reuse the water runoff after passing through a series of built-in filters.

Most units will allow you to perform a series of cuts from straight cuts to diagonal cuts as well as angled miter cuts. When you start getting into more professional models you have cutting features that allow plunge cuts and small intricate cuts for getting around outlets and pipes.

Both wet and dry cutting have their place but you’ll most commonly come across wet tile saws, as an all around tile cutting machine you most likely are going to need a wet tile saw.

Dry Tile Saws are great for small cuts and softer material but often cannot be used for cutting harder materials and long continuous cuts as too much heat and friction will build up.

A wet tile saw is needed when cutting harder materials such as Granite or Porcelain to prevent heat buildup that would occur due to the density of the material.

Today there is a variety of wet and dry tile saws on the market.

There are stationary tile saws that are similar to a table saw or chop saw and there are handheld tile saws that are similar to skill saws.

Both have their appropriate applications.

Tabletop wet tile saws are great for larger applications and straight cuts as many have guided rail system’s to assist with cutting precision straight cuts. Tabletop tiles saws are also great for cutting straight or diagonal pieces with smaller tiles as with a handheld you’re having to hold the tile as while cutting.

Where a handheld tile saw comes in handy is when you’re performing intricate cuts and curves. Many handheld saws will have the ability to run a regular diamond blade but also be able to run a curved blade for making perfect curved cuts.

Handheld tile saws are also great for doing renovations when you need to cut pieces already fixed into place.

Handheld saws can also be used overhead for the extra tricky application out there.

Before you start using a Wet Tile saw its very important to wear proper safety gear.

Because you are grinding stone and tile, little pieces of stone can fly up and if you’re not wearing appropriate equipment you can get seriously injured.

It’s always advised to wear impact resistant safety glasses or a protective shield, durable gloves and ear protection as cutting can be loud.

Always ensure all cords are out of the way while working to prevent tripping and hazards around your work area.
